Using the Tune Collection Index

Here are some Hints for using the Collection.

Finding Tunes and Using the Search Box.

The index takes the form of a table. There are several ways in which you can control what is displayed.

• It can display 10, 25, 50 or 100 tune entries at a time.

• Clicking on the (hard to see) arrows at the right of a column sorts the results by that column; clicking again reverses the alphabetical order.

• The Search box lets you enter multiple words separated by spaces, and finds matches even if the words are from different columns.

  • So, for example, a search on "reel" will return any tune with that word in its title, tune type or tune tags.

  • A search "key-D McQuillen waltz" will return all waltzes by Bob McQuilllen in the key of D.

• There are some searches that may be of interest. "LRB" returns all tunes in the Lamprey River Band tunebook. "New England" returns all tunes in the New England repertoire; "New Hampshire" returns tunes from or associated with New Hampshire. Note that this isn't saying the tune is from New England or New Hampshire.

• You may get two or three listings with the same name. These are different versions of the tune, differing in key, source, ornamentation or other characteristics.

• If you use a phone try viewing it in landscape orientation. Note that Playable Tunes may not work on a phone or a tablet.

Finding & Viewing Playable Tunes and abc Code. There are three links for each tune in the last column, corresponding to three ways to view the tunes.

• Please note: Each link opens a new browser tab, so the Tune Index and associated help remain available.

• There are two options for Playable Tunes. Click on Page to go to the page containing that tune and all others in its category. From there, use the menu at the top of the window to go directly to the tune. This takes longer to load, especially on a slower computer, but lets you browse the tunes.

• Click on Tune to go to a page with only that tune displayed. If you have a slower computer it should load considerably more quickly. Please note that you can use the yellow menu in the upper right to see a list of all tunes on the page; click on a link to open one.

• One advantage of the single-tune pages is that they let you make temporary edits to the tune by choosing Source Edit from the yellow menu. A couple things you can do (described in the comments at the beginning of the tune code): (1) Right before the tunes begin, notice the line %%MIDI chordvol 75. Change the number from 0-100 to control the volume of the accompaniment. (2) Control the tempo. In any tune, between the T: line and the K: line make a new line and type Q:100 or some similar number. If it's too fast or too slow, change the number.

• The abc code links take you to the location of the tune on a page of tunes in abc format.
