Using the abc Pages

The Download Page has some ideas for how best to use this and other download pages. If you haven't already looked at, you might find it helpful.

  • Click Here For Help. Click opens a box with a good discussion of finding, copying and using tunes in abc format..

The Header Page contains abc formatting code that, if pasted at the beginning of any abc document, will set font sizes and other useful details of appearance.

Help Topics include:

  • Using abc notation and where to get additional help.
  • Copying Tunes for personal use: what to copy and how to use it.
  • Using the Menus at the top of the page to find tunes on this page and in this section, and to navigate the website.
  • Learn about the Tune Index and the Tune Categories, and learning to Play the Tunes.

Waltzes & Other Couples Dances

Here is the collection of waltzes, with a few tunes for other couples dances at the end. Note that when titles begin with generic words like "A", "The", "Reel de", etc., they may be alphabetized under the second or third word. To find a specific tune you may find it useful to consult the Tune Index page (link above). Tune listing links take you to the tune's location on the page.

H:This is a transcription of Aldor Morin playing the tune on harmonica. I include
H:a few attempts at transcribing harmonica ornamentation, but didn't try to be
H:complete in part for reasons of legibility, and in part due to my limited ability
H:to transcribe many of the details. Chords are transcribed from the recording as

H:
H:Aldor Morin got started playing harmonica at the age of 6. He learned harmonica
H:from Madame Bolduc and by the age of 7 was playing out around Québec. He played
H:with Jean Carignan, Tommy Duschesne and Isidore Soucy among others. He was also

H:In $2The Waltz Book II$0, Bill Matthiesen says, quoting Lisa Ornstein, that Philippe Bruneau
H:and Aldor Morin both sometimes played for the Soucy Family's $2Chez Isidore$0 television
H:show. "Philippe Bruneau popularized this waltz under the name $2Valse Aldor$0. although
H:its original and correct title is $2Valse Louise$0." On this recording he calls it
H:$2Valse Armandine$0. Jean Duval wrote that Fortunat Malouin might have composed the waltz,
H:naming it for his daughter Armandine who accompanied him on his records. He recorded it
H:in 1929, at which time Aldor Morin was 8 years old. But Aldor Morin had already been
H:playing for a couple years, having studied with Madame Bolduc, so he can't be ruled
H:out as the composer.
H:
H:This is as accurate a transcription of Philippe Bruneau's version of the tune as I'm
H:capable of doing. If you're familiar with his playing you're likely to be aware that
H:his ornamentation is complex, and he plays many variations, On this recording there
H:are a number of other instruments that create a rich sound that's great to listen to
H:but hard to transcribe.
H:
H:I include some of his idiosyncratic phrasing and timing. He doesn't play each detail
H:all the time; and he has other variations not represented here. In the descending run
H:of triplets he sometimes only plays some notes as triplets. If you want to avoid the high
H:D at the end of the A part, the last 4 measures could be played an octave lower.

S:Strathspey, $2New England Contra Dance Music,$0 Kicking Mule 216, 1977.
H:I learned this from Strathspey fiddler Jane McBride (now Orzechowski).
H:There are a couple places in this tune where there are chord choices that make a
H:big difference in the overall feel of the tune, and even in the melody. At the
H:end of the A and B parts an E7 chord may be used in place of the G chord (see
H:Alternate ending). This likely affects the playing of the previous couple
H:measures as well as the overall sound of the tune. In the Sloanaker & Parkes
H:chord book they suggest a G#7 chord which is rather startling to hear, but
H:nevertheless works surprisingly well, especially as an occasional variation.

H:revised by Peter Yarensky.
H:
H:$2Playing note:$0 In measure A6, Jerry tied the two E notes together. The C
H:and second E are emphasized, with the second E being the strongest.
H:
H:I learned this from the recording of George Wilson. Later on Burt Feintuch

H:Jerry play the tune I adopted his version. This transcription is close to how
H:Jerry plays the tune, but doesn't capture all the subtleties of his playing.

S:Played by the Maine Country Dance Orchestra in Bowdoinham, ME.
H:This is one of many zweifachers played for turning dances. They alternate between
H:waltzes and pivots in an often quite irregular fashion. Often when zweifachers are
H:danced the sequence is posted in large print for the dancers to follow.
N:From the Lamprey River Band Tunebook, on NH Country Dance (URL below), along with many New England,
