Fiddle Tunes in abc & Standard Notation

Tunes with Associated Dances

This page contains the abc code for tunes that are generally associated with specific dances. The abc code makes for a long page. See below for some hints and tools for effective usage.

Using the abc Pages

The Download Page has some ideas for how best to use this and other download pages. If you haven't already looked at, you might find it helpful.

  • Click Here For Help. Click opens a box with a good discussion of finding, copying and using tunes in abc format..

The Header Page contains abc formatting code that, if pasted at the beginning of any abc document, will set font sizes and other useful details of appearance.

Help Topics include:

  • Using abc notation and where to get additional help.
  • Copying Tunes for personal use: what to copy and how to use it.
  • Using the Menus at the top of the page to find tunes on this page and in this section, and to navigate the website.
  • Learn about the Tune Index and the Tune Categories, and learning to Play the Tunes.

Tunes with Associated Dances

Here is the collection of tunes with associated dances: contras, squares and other dances that are generally danced to that tune. Note that when titles begin with generic words like "A", "The", "Reel de", etc., they may be alphabetized under the second or third word. To find a specific tune you may find it useful to consult the Tune Index page (link above). Tune listing links take you to the tune's location on the page.

Chorus Jig

H:Play in the sequence ABCD; note that the B and D parts are identical so it's really ABCB.
H:Some people like to play a modal (C) chord during the 4th and 8th measures of the C part.
H:In my opinion this would better be done now and then for effect than all the time.

Hull's Victory

T:Hull's Victory
H:The dance goes very well with the tune; it can be disruptive to the dancers to
H:switch tunes. Bob McQuillen wrote a tune called $2Hull's Relief$0 that
H:makes a good change tune; it's sort of like $2Hull's Victory$0 inside out.
H:The other good change tune is Hull's Victory in D, with a switch back
H:to F at the end. Therefore I'm also including the tune in D in this collection.

Hull's Victory

X:3205213
T:Hull's Victory
H:It's best not to change tunes with Hull's Victory; it is likely to be disruptive
H:for the dancers. If you want a channge tune, consider Hull's Victory in D.
H:The usual sequence would be Hull's Victory in F, switch to D, and then back to F.
H:Hull's Victory in F is also included in this collection.

S:New England contradances, and recordings by the Canterbury Country Dance
S:Orchestra, David Kaynor, Vivian Williams, Rod & Randy Miller.
H:Ralph Page ($2Northern Junket,$0 Vol. 2 #11, Oct. 1951) said, "About one hundred years
H:ago in this part of New Hampshire the people dropped eight measures of music,
H:tho retaining the same number of figures. So you are doing a 32 measure dance
H:to 24 measures of music." Instead of playing the tune in the AABB sequence
H:as it had been, it was now played in the ABC sequence.
H:
H:The G chord is a fun but rather startling alternative, best used sparingly. I learned it
H:from the playing of Randy Miller, $2New England Chestnuts$0 (Alcazar FR 203).

H:When playing for a dance it generalliy makes sense to end at the end of the dance.

H:This tune has been used for Petronella in Vermont. It can be played by itself or,
H:as is often done in New Hampshire, as a change tune for Petronella, preferably
H:with a switch back to Petronella at the end. The high part in the first half of
H:B2 comes from Rodney Miller, and is optional. It used to be played the same as
H:in that part of B1 and I usually play it that way. The B chord in the second half
H:of B2 is also optional but adds a lot to the tune.

H:Traditionally the last square of the evening at Monadnock area dances.
H:The alternate chords are worth considering. The Maple Sugar Band (Marcel
H:Robidas' band, Dover NH) played a IV chord at the beginning of the B part. At the
H:Contoocook NH square dance they played something dramatic which is approximated
H:by the E7-A7 progression (although minor chords could be played instead).
H:It's most commonly played in D and G; the D version is elsewhere in this collection.

H:$2Down Yonder$0 is a part of many different repertoires. In the New England repertoire

H:The square dance version has a half-length B part because the chorus of

H:I danced this dance to many musicians and callers. It's a 16-bar dance, sometimes
H:possibly danced as a 32-bar dance. This is my best recall of how it was played.
H:I consulted with recordings of April Limber and Dick Richardson. The tune
H:is related to Col. Robertson which is a three-part tune and some people play
H:all three parts with repeats.

S:$2Dick Richardson: Old Time New Hampshire Fiddler.$0 Originally recorded 1952.
H:The previous version is what I remember dancing to with reference to a recording of
H:April Limber playing it for Duke Miller. This is a recording of Dick Rickardson
H:who played for Ralph Page for many years. The B part is different and not related to Col.
H:Robertson's. Interestingly in the recording of April playing it she plays this B part
H:the first time through. Dick Richardson repeated both parts.
