Using the abc Pages

The Download Page has some ideas for how best to use this and other download pages. If you haven't already looked at, you might find it helpful.

  • Click Here For Help. Click opens a box with a good discussion of finding, copying and using tunes in abc format..

The Header Page contains abc formatting code that, if pasted at the beginning of any abc document, will set font sizes and other useful details of appearance.

Help Topics include:

  • Using abc notation and where to get additional help.
  • Copying Tunes for personal use: what to copy and how to use it.
  • Using the Menus at the top of the page to find tunes on this page and in this section, and to navigate the website.
  • Learn about the Tune Index and the Tune Categories, and learning to Play the Tunes.

Marches & Canadian Two-Steps

Here is the collection of marches and Canadian two-steps. Note that when titles begin with generic words like "A", "The", "Reel de", etc., they may be alphabetized under the second or third word. To find a specific tune you may find it useful to consult the Tune Index page (link above). Tune listing links take you to the tune's location on the page.

April's March

T:April's March
C:Bob McQuillen
S:New England Tradition, $2Farewell To The Hollow.$0 Whistler's Music,
S:CDWM 9860, 1988 and 1991.
H:Written for April Limber, fidder for New England Tradition.
H:April's, Pete's and Deanna's Marches were played by New England Tradition
H:as a set in that order. In the late 1980s we still danced to marches
H:pretty frequently and this was my favorite set.
H:The melody is largely as written. One notable exception is in the A part
H:measure 3. Bob wrote it with a B, but April always played it with an A.
H:and that's how I wrote it here.
H:Chords are identified as accurately as possible from Bob's playing on the
H:New England Tradition recording.
N:From the Lamprey River Band Tunebook, on NH Country Dance (URL below), along with many New England,
N:Canadian & Swedish tunes, and resources for abc notation and New England traditional music and dance.

C:Bob McQuillen
S:New England Tradition, $2Farewell To The Hollow.$0 Whistler's Music,

H:Written for Deanna Stiles, flute player for Old New England.
H:April's, Pete's and Deanna's Marches were played by New England Tradition
H:as a set in that order. April's March is the brightest of the three. Pete's
H:is a bit darker, and Deanna's is the darkest and the hardest to learn

H:This was a favorite of Elise Nichols who played for Boston-area dances probably
H:in tue 1950s or 1960s. One night square dance George Hodgson was looking for a
H:tune for a square dance and she suggested this tune; it quickly became one of
H:his favorites. I learned it at the West Hopkinton NH square dance and started
